Are your mobile phones and home phone costing you too much?

In a recent coaching session I discovered that a source of the client's stress was the incorrect, inadequate and expensive plan she had for her mobile phone and we've decided to do something about it.

Some tips for phone and internet

• Know your plan and what is included and what will cost you extra
• Be wary of the new phones that require you to download 'applications'/'apps' from the internet. The app itself may be cheap but the download from the internet (depending on the file size) and the time you spend to download that file (due to a possibly bad or slow connection) could add big dollars to your bill at the end of the month.
• Go easy on the competitions that require you to SMS your answers or votes to a TV show or competition
• Be very wary of the deals advertised on television that have a subscription attached or require multiple answers to questionaires. Read the fine print because you may be up for $5 per SMS you receive. Ideally, leave these competitions and deals alone
• Why pay for a screensaver picture when you can just take a photograph with your phone and use that picture as your screensaver
• Downloading tunes or games can seem like fun but be aware of hidden subscriptions
• If you do get a large bill that you're uncertain of, call your provider straight away and get one of their representatives to explain it for you
• Consider the environment each time you upgrade your equipment. Consider where the precious metals come from and the people of developing countries that are destroying their habitats to mine these metals for a pittance. Be sure to recycle or act with restraint

Australia is a country that has more mobile phones than people. We are a country obsessed with communication with a multi-billion dollar communication industry that is laughing all the way to the bank. In researching mobile phones, home phones, business plans and mobile internet there are literally hundreds of products that provide some sort of solution for all sorts of situations but how do you find a product that suits you and most of all, how do you find a company that will look after your interests?

For some reason the answers seem to come to you when the question is asked. The answer came to me in the form of a global provider that a friend of mine is involved with. The company has been in Australia for a number of years and they don't operate on the same platform as large groups such as Telstra,Vodafone, Three or Optus although they do use the same networks and are able to provide the same level of coverage and a vastly improved customer service experience. I was invited to his house and we sat and chatted about the solutions he could provide on all of the levels I required plus more.

The chance to set yourself up properly by someone who is actually willing to work personally with you is a rare one these days and my friend was happy to sit down with me to go through the options. How do you believe this is different to all of the others in the marketplace? The answer is simple. He has set himself up as a company representative which entitles him to commissions and bonuses payable to him by the company, similar to the commissions that are payable to the owners of the shops in the big centres. You may have seen the glitzy shops in the large shopping centres that have obviously taken hundreds of thousands of dollars to establish but my friend has a different set-up. He works from the comfort of his own home and travels to see people in the comfort of theirs at times that are convenient to them. With word of mouth being his most powerful marketing tool and his positive attitude he has established himself with a business that he cares about and that will look after him for a long time to come.

The products and services were very competitive and there were more than I had expected. I was excited by the opportunity that presented itself to me, so much so that I have decided to become a representative myself.
