There are many arguments for and against 'loyalty' programs and there certainly seem to be many out there.

 

Here's what we think.

 

Loyalty programs can be good if:

  • You don't go out of your way to use them
  • They don't cost you anything (annual fees or sign up fees)
  • You don't buy anything out of the ordinary or spend more than you have to to benefit from them


What we find:

  • People are driving further to shop somewhere where they receive a 'discount' voucher for fuel and then drive out of their way to get that fuel
  • The queues at these petrol stations are longer and therefore the car engine is running longer
  • Even the largest vehicles might be lucky to save $3 on a tank of fuel
  • The fuel is usually priced higher than everywhere else so the discount isn't as effective
  • Some loyalty programs charge you an annual membership fee
  • You may need to spend $10,000.00 to get a 'free' $20 meal at a restaurant you wouldn't normally go to anyway
  • Extra bonus points are offered when you purchase multiples of products that you wouldn't normally consume or use
  • A lot of people lose focus of the big ticket expenses like techniques for saving on interest payments on a home loan
  • More time can be spent on thinking about things that will enrich our lives instead of saving a few pennies
